What is inspected? (continued...)

We will inspect and check the type and R-Value of your attic insulation. We will also check that the insulation is not impeding air flow. Baffles are put in place specifically for this purpose. However, sometimes the attic insulation is inadvertently blown over the baffles which will impede your attic ventilation.

Maximum attic insulation efficiency would include :

(1) Blown Wool (R-38+)
(2) Radiant Barrier, and
(3) Attic door insulation (attic tent).

Let’s take a look at each of the above insulation items:
(1) BLOWN WOOL INSULATION

Blown wool insulation is the most common form of attic insulation. The R-Value of loose fill insulation depends upon its density, not just its thickness. Mixing excessive air with the insulation as it is blown onto the attic floor, a process known as “fluffing”, increases the insulation’s loft and gives the appearance of greater material, and hence higher R-Value.

We will check both the density and the depth of your insulation to establish if your R-Value is sufficient.

RADIANT BARRIER | RADIANT BARRIER SPRAY | RADIANT BARRIER PAINT

Radiant Heat accounts for 93% of heat gain in the summer, and 50% to 60% of heat loss in the winter!

Radiant Barrier is a low emissivity reflective coating that is sprayed on your attic ceiling. See insulation diagram above. Radiant Barrier reflects the sun's heat away from your home, subsequently keeping your attic cooler, and your electric bills lower!

  • Radiant Barrier reflects over 80% of the sun’s heat away from your home.
  • Lowers the temperature in the attic 30 - 40 degrees!
  • Permeable - does not trap moisture - allows water vapor to permeate.
  • Excellent investment - reduces heating and cooling costs by as much as 15% (as certified by an independent testing laboratory).
  • Greatly improves interior comfort levels.
  • Improves efficiency of existing insulation. (Makes R-19 work like an R-35).
  • Only economical way to retrofit radiant barrier to existing structures.
  • May be easily applied to side walls and garage doors.
  • Unaffected by rodents, birds and insects.

(3) ATTIC DOOR INSULATION (ATTIC TENT)
to view the video!

There is typically substantial air transfer/air loss through the attic accesses/pull down stairs. Additionally, this access way also creates harmful airborne particles of dust and fiberglass (insulation) each time the attic door is opened or closed.

The solution? An attic tent.

  • Easy to open and close (zip).
  • Slows down air infiltration into the home
  • Prevents loose insulation and dust particles from falling through
